The City has a comprehensive solid waste management program which includes yard waste collection which is converted to compost. Residential Sanitation & Recycling Rules Rules & GuidelinesThe Sanitation Department is committed to keeping the City of Marietta clean and to avoiding health hazards caused by garbage and trash. Listed below are the City’s requirements for the handling of solid waste (garbage). We hope this information will help you, the customer, join efforts with the Sanitation Department to help keep Marietta cleaner, ensure the safety of sanitation workers, and preserve our environment. Working together, we can continue to make Marietta a city we enjoy calling home. Solid Waste Handling Requirements - Customers must have Sanitation service with the City of Marietta and display an official City decal in order for garbage to be picked up.
- Households must have an adequate number of garbage cans with tight-fitting lids. Customers are picked up according to their service level, any addition cans above their service level will be charged at the rate of $5.00 per can per pick up.
- Cans must not exceed 32 gallons in size. There will be a $10.00 charge per pick up for each can that exceeds 32 gallons.
- No sharp items that can cause injury to collection personnel are to be placed in cans; the overall weight of the can, when full, cannot exceed 60 pounds.
- Cans should be stored at the rear of each household; they can be placed curbside before 7:00 a.m. only on the scheduled day of collection.
- Call the Sanitation Division at 770-794-5581 to make arrangements for collection of large trash items that cannot fit in your garbage can. Fees will vary, depending on weight and volume.
- Wednesday is the pick-up day for brush and yard trimmings. Yard trimmings must not to be mixed with regular household garbage. Branches and limbs are to be cut into lengths of 6 feet or less, and no single piece shall be more than 4 inches in diameter or weigh more than 100 pounds. Grass and leaves must be bagged and set next to the curb. Bags for grass and leaves must not exceed 32 gallons in size. The City will not pick up logs and stumps.
- There will be an excessive yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, shrubs, pine cones, pine needles, and brush) collection fee that will be added at the rate of $100.00 per load (approximately 200 cubic feet or 4x4x12) or (48 bags or more of yard waste) and/or a combination of both to equal 200 cubic feet. Residents should notify the Sanitation Department when they have excessive amounts of brush.
- Trash or yard trimmings are to be placed at the curb adjacent to the originating property before 7:00 a.m. only on the scheduled day of collection. Items placed at the curb are not to obstruct sidewalks, gutters or the free movement of traffic.
- Households, contractors and tree surgeons are responsible for disposal of construction debris, demolition’s waste, and trees or oversized limbs. The City will not collect these items. The City will not pick up any parts of a tree that a tree surgeon cuts down. The tree surgeon is responsible for removal of the tree.
- It is unlawful to sweep or throw waste material into streets, vacant lots, streams, storm drains, sewers or someone else’s container or any dumpsites.
- The City will not collect building material, tires, motor oil, batteries, liquid and hazardous wastes. Paint will be collected if completely dried out and placed next to the curb on your regular garbage day. Remove lids. Using cat litter or sand can dry out paint.
- Cat litter must be doubled bagged and placed by the curb (curbside only) on your regular garbage day.
City decals for your garbage container for new residents must be obtained through Marietta Powers Customer Service Department at 675 North Marietta Parkway, or you may call 770-794-5150, to request they be mailed to you. Replacement stickers must be ordered from the Sanitation Department, call 770-794-5581 or 770-794-5595. If you do not display a sticker on your garbage can, you will be charged a $10.00 (per can) administration fee each time we collect your garbage. Extra Pick-Ups When you need to dispose of items that will not fit in your garbage can, please contact the Sanitation Department at 770-794-5581 to make arrangements for a special pick-up. There will be an additional charge for special pick-ups. This charge will be added to your Sanitation bill. Not all items can be collected by the Sanitation Department. If in doubt, please confirm when you place your request for a special pick-up. Some of the items we do not pick up are: building material; batteries; rocks; dirt; cement; car parts; motor oil, cans of paint that are not completely dried up, and hazardous waste. Most of these items can be taken to the Cobb County transfer station on County Services Parkway. The phone number for Cobb County disposal information is (770-528-2500). All special pick-ups must be placed on the curb before 7:00 a.m. Newspaper Recycling Newspapers will be picked up by the City of Marietta on Thursday or Friday whichever is your regular garbage day. Newspapers must be placed in a grocery bag (paper or plastic) and placed on the curb before 7:00 a.m. No loose newspapers will be collected. (The bins on the side of the Sanitation trucks do not have lids and loose papers may litter the streets.) PLEASE DO NOT PUT NEWSPAPER IN THE BFI RECYCLING BIN. We appreciate your effort in recycling newspapers. BFI Recycling Requirements Curbside collection of recyclable materials takes place on Monday thru Friday. Call 770-794-5581 if you are unsure of your collection day for recycling. Please call BFI at (404) 794-1145 to request your recycling bin be brought to your home or to report your recycling was not picked up as scheduled.

All recycling must be placed on the curb by 7:00 a.m. CompostingThe City of Marietta Sanitation Division collects yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, and small limbs. This material is not sent to a landfill. Instead, it is delivered to a compost facility where a contractor distributes the yard waste over a large area and converts it to compost.The compost is screened to remove large debris and create the finished product. The processing time to convert yard waste to compost is approximately 12 months. |
